About Us
Tim Coombs and his father Terry Coombs have been making staircases for the last 25 years together. Both being involved in metalwork and engineering previously, they joined forces, originally to make lifts in their small rented workshop in the heart of Cambridgeshire. They were approached one day to provide a quotation for a full metal staircase and metal balustrading for a new business development in the centre of London. This project paved the way to start a new fabrication service of manufacturing and the site fitting of steel stairs and to move away from the lift industry where the work was getting harder to come by for smaller companies . We moved to a bigger premises where we could manufacture the stairs in long sections in the workshop and expand our fabrication facilities .
Moving into the construction industry was a new world to us but once we had our paperwork and tickets in place we became qualified to take on stair projects. We have worked on many projects over the years up and down the country providing people with stairs from just 2 floors to many more in the construction industry. The contracted projects were mainly schools, offices and other commercial developments . Occasionally we would get the chance to work on a big house that required a timber staircase and we would be asked to supply and fit the balustrading as it would be made from stainless steel with either glass balustrades or stainless infills.
This made us think that we could offer private clients a service of not just the balustrading but offering them a contemporary metal staircase to rather than the traditional timber stairs that have been around for a while. Our first real chance at providing someone with something totally new in concept of a metal bespoke stairs came from a very good friend of mine. Pete Tonks from PJT Design approached us about such a concept. We worked together and produced a raw steel , single spine stair with solid oak treads and thick toughened glass as the balustrade with no handrail. This stair paved the way for us to enter the self build market and saw us generally start to move away from commercial building projects ,offering something new, bespoke and contemporary staircases to this ever growing market in the name of Edge Bespoke.
